I agree. I have liked Rachel Cusk in the past, but this trilogy (and yes, I did read all three of them) left me more admiring rather than truly engaged. There was a coldness about it - which was noticeably NOT the case with her more straightforwardly memoir-like books Aftermath and A Life's Work.

I liked A Life's Work -- I enjoyed its darkness -- and I'm definitely reading more Cusk essays and maybe novels outside the trilogy, although maybe I'll finish the trilogy too, just to see how it goes.

Oh, and I am a bit of a Dazai Osamu obsessive and this January I reread a lot of his work, including No Longer Human, as well as the work of his daughter. Feel free to ignore the links below, because I do rabbit on quite a bit about them both. https://findingtimetowrite.wordpress.com/2021/01/24/january-in-japan-dazai-osamu/

Oh, my goodness, thank you for the links! That's great! I know nothing of Dazai Osamu, and am happy to learn more. I'll be writing about Territory of Light next week.
